Paula Abdul seen slurring in TV interview

NEW YORK - “American Idol” judge Paula Abdul canceled media interviews Friday as an online video emerged of the television star slurring and gesticulating her way through a TV interview a day earlier.

Some viewers of the footage posted on the popular online video site YouTube.com suggested she should head into rehab because it appeared she had been drinking.

But Abdul’s spokesman, Jeff Ballard, denied that was under the influence of alcohol or on some kind of medication and said the U.S. performer never drank.

Ballard said the interview was one of the last in a string of question-and-answer sessions she had done over two hours Thursday ahead of a new season of “American Idol,” debuting next week on the Fox network.

“She was exhausted. This was at the end of three days of press (interviews and appearances), and she has had cameras following her around for a reality TV show too,” said Ballard, referring to a new documentary series about the star’s life.

“She was sitting in a room with just a camera and a mic on, and the controllers dropped the sound twice, which is why she rolled her eyes.”

'She was a little tired'
Ballard said Abdul, 44, had canceled all media interviews Friday because she had a sore throat after sitting in the chilly studio Thursday.

“She never drinks. I have known Paula Abdul since she was 13, and I have never seen her drink ever in my life. ... And no, she is not on any kind of medication,” he said. “She was a little tired.”

Abdul, a former Los Angeles Lakers cheerleader who gained fame in the late 1980s as a pop singer with such hits as “Straight Up,” has been known for emotional displays on “American Idol.”

In a 2005 People magazine interview, she denied having a drug problem, saying, “I’m not addicted to pills of any kind.”

She went on to explain that she suffers from a neurological disorder that causes chronic pain and requires a weekly injection of an anti-inflammatory drug.

Bravo to capture Paula Abdul's life in new series

American Idol judge and actress-singer Paula Abdul's life will be the subject of a TV series on US cable network Bravo, media reports have said.

The series, called Hey Paula, will trail the 44-year-old singer during the filming of American Idol and also that of Bratz: The Movie, which she is starring in and producing. Abdul's business of clothes, perfume and jewelry lines will be included in the series as well.

“Bravo has been successful with profiling dynamic, creative personalities that quicken the pulse of pop culture. Paula's career epitomizes the frenzy of Hollywood as it relates to television, music, dance and style. Viewers will get an intimate glimpse at the real woman behind the headlines,” said Lauren Zalaznick, the president of Bravo, while announcing the series. However, the show will capture only her present and will not be biographical, Zalaznick said.

The aim of the show is to capture all the facets of Abdul's career, including those as 'a business woman, producer, choreographer, singer and friend', a statement released by the network said. “It's a hectic time in my life right now with several projects in television, film and fashion. I'm excited to open the doors to Bravo and have all my fans see the other sides to me, beyond what they see on American Idol,” Abdul responded to the announcement. In April last year, the Head Over Heels singer entered jewelry designing and launched her Paula Abdul Jewelry Collection.

Produced by Scott Sternberg Productions, Hey Paula will premiere later this year. It is not clear if it will include the 2003 controversy where American Idol contestant Corey Clark had accused Abdul of offering him her support and advice in return for sexual favors. Investigations into the allegations by Fox, the channel that airs American Idol, cleared Abdul of any such misdeeds.

Bravo, a part of NBC Universal, airs pop culture and entertainment shows, some of which include Inside the Actors Studio, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, Celebrity Poker Showdown, and Top Chef among others.

Paula Abdul, Tim Gunn to star in Bravo reality shows

PASADENA, Calif. — American Idol judge Paula Abdul is getting her own reality show, and so is Project Runway's Tim Gunn, Bravo told critics here Friday at TV's semi-annual press tour.

Bravo, which set ratings records last year thanks to Runway and Top Chef, and is readying Top Design for a Jan. 31 debut, unveiled several new shows due later this year or early in 2008.

Hey Paula promises "an insider perspective" of the onetime singer and choreographer, who's now a movie producer (Bratz), and purveyor of perfume, jewelry and clothing.

"This is a hectic time of my life," she said in a statement, adding she's excited to "have all my fans see the other sides to me beyond what they see on American Idol."

Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, similar to TLC's What Not to Wear, is a makeover show that will "chronicle one person's fashion dilemmas," solved by the stylist and Runway judge. (Gunn is expected to continue on Runway).

Jaclyn Smith (Charlie's Angels) will host Shear Genius, a hairstylist reality competition due this spring. And as expected, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, which started Bravo's reality-series push, has been canceled, and will air its fifth and final 10-episode season starting in July.

NEW YORK — A video of an interview with Paula Abdul appears to show the "American Idol" judge slurring her words and rocking back and forth in her seat, but her publicist says any oddities in the tape were due to technical difficulties.

The video clip, which has wound up on the file-sharing Web site YouTube, is of a morning-show interview Abdul did Thursday via satellite from New York with the local FOX affiliate in Seattle.

The very upbeat Abdul seems to be slurring her words during much of the segment, and at times she is moving around so much in her chair that she almost swivels right out of the shot.

Her publicist, Jeff Ballard, told FOXNews.com that the buzz surrounding the clip, which is titled "Paula Abdul — What is she smokin'???" on YouTube, is "much ado about nothing."

"It was a technical problem," he said. "They dropped the sound not once but twice. She's in a little room by herself and could hear people shouting in her mike. She did 20 of those interviews without incident. It was simply a matter of Seattle screwing up."

He denied that Abdul's speech was impaired during the interview.

"She was not slurring her words," said Ballard.

"American Idol," which premieres Tuesday night on FOX, has distanced itself from the incident. A spokeswoman for the popular singing-competition reality show referred all inquiries about Abdul's behavior in the interview to Ballard.

In other "Idol" news, when asked about Bob Dylan's wish to join him as a judge on the series, Simon Cowell told British paper The Guardian, "Bob Dylan bores me to tears.

"I don't believe the Bob Dylans of this world would make 'American Idol' a better show," he told the newspaper.

Slurring Abdul Cancels Interviews

Singer-turned-American Idol judge Paula Abdul called off all her interviews yesterday after clips of an earlier TV appearance appeared to show her drunk.

The video - in which Abdul slurs and bizarrely gesticulates - emerged on online file sharing site YouTube on Thursday, prompting speculation alcohol or medication were to blame.

She subsequently abandoned media engagements scheduled for Friday.

However, Abdul's spokesman Jeff Ballard insists tiredness and a minor throat infection, not inebriation, were the causes of the cancellations and earlier odd behaviour.

He says, "She was exhausted. This was at the end of three days of press (interviews and appearances), and she has had cameras following her around for a reality TV show too."

"She was sitting in a room with just a camera and a mic on, and the controllers dropped the sound twice, which is why she rolled her eyes."

Simon: Paula, the only people who would buy your album are emotionally stunted cat ladies who were obsessed with you in 1988.

Paula: Simon, you seem to forget that I was super famous. Not just kind of famous, super famous. I danced with an animated cat. "Forever Your Girl" sold like 17 million copies. My romance with Arsenio was sizzling. Who the heck knew what your face looked like before "American Idol"?

Simon: Well, Paula, you hardly look like you did back then. Even I was not completely unaroused by you back in the day.

Randy: Yo, Paula, you are still a mad freaky hot diva. Work it out!

Simon: What is this, "The Randy Puckers Up to Paula's Posterior" show? Shouldn't we call someone in to audition? There are 500,000 people outside.

Paula: I just can't deal with it yet. Randy, please pass me that vodka so I can pour it in my water glass.

Simon: Paula, that is a brilliant idea. Would you please fill my glass too, baby?

Randy: My name ain't baby. It's Randy. Mr. Jackson, if you're nasty.

Paula: You know, we should make up a drinking game to make this ordeal more fun.

Simon: I never thought I'd say this, but that's a great idea, Paula. How about we all take a swig every time someone totally sucks?

Randy: Check this out: If we do that, we'll have alcohol poisoning in 20 minutes. Dawg does not like getting his gastric-bypassed stomach pumped. Check it. Let's make it positive: Every time someone sings well, we'll take a swig.

Paula: Then we won't get drunk at all. I got it, guys. How about we drink every time some Clay Aiken-looking loser walks in and sings a Richard Marx song?

Randy: Nice, Paula dawg.

Simon: Great compromise, P. Looks like we finally all agree on something. Bring in the first victim!

"American Idol" kicks off Season 6 on Tuesday. Which means that judge Paula Abdul is getting back on the TV airwaves. Which means we can start getting ready for those little questions. You know the ones we're talking about.

Is she drunk?

Is she stoned?

Is she hanging out with Danny DeVito?

Or is that just Paula being Paula?

The talk started again Thursday, after Abdul's morning interview on Seattle Fox affiliate station Q13FOX. During the interview, reports say she seemed, well, out of it. As a Seattle Times account noted, "Paula Abdul looked utterly loopy, slurring words, smiling crookedly, waving with both hands, unable to stay quite in the camera's frame during a live interview (from New York City) to talk about Seattle's singing talent." Another account said Abdul seemed on the verge of nodding off during one question, and that she seemed to have trouble understanding and responding to questions.

You can see it for yourself on YouTube.

Abdul's reps sprung into action Friday -- and they should be well-rehearsed, as this is not the first time Abdul has appeared loopy on TV -- insisting that she was not inebriated, and that most of her, um, tentative behavior was due to technical problems that prevented her from hearing her interviewers. The station did indeed acknowledge that there were technical problems.

Abdul also did a satellite interview on Bay Area station KTVU on Thursday, and at least one viewer told the People Column that Abdul looked "wasted." KTVU did not comment on the interview.

MEANWHILE ... The Bravo cable channel says it's making a reality TV series about Abdul. It's titled "Hiiiii Everybody, I'm Paula ... um, Somethingorother, and wellllllcome tomy liiiiiifeeee."

Well, no, it's called "Hey Paula," and it's set to debut sometime later this year. It will follow Abdul around as she films a new season of "American Idol," works on "Bratz: The Movie" and develops her own perfume and cosmetics line.

CRIKEY, THIS IS CREEPY: Bindi Irwin, the 8-year-old daughter of the late "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin, is following in her dad's footsteps.

The khaki-clad girl made her American TV debut Thursday on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," skipping across the set holding a blue-tongued lizard as she greeted the audience.

"This is Spanky. He's 10 years old," Bindi told DeGeneres as she prodded the lizard to lick her face in an attempt to show its tongue. "I just love animals. My dad really brought it out in me," Bindi said. "He's the one that made me."

Steve Irwin died Sept. 4 from the poisonous jab of a stingray. Along with Bindi, he left behind his wife, Terri, and 2-year-old son, Bob.

BUT WE'RE SURE SHE LEARNED A LESSON IN ALL THIS: The artist formerly known as Miss Nevada USA, that is, until photos of her partying up a storm and making out with women showed up on the Internet, has landed on her feet.

Katie Rees has signed a two-year, $2 million-plus deal to host a revival of an "estrogen-heavy" variety show at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Jeff Beacher, promoter of the night club known as Beacher's Madhouse, announced Friday.

"She's a cool girl, she's beautiful, she's fun, she's got a great stage presence. I thought she'd be a great fit," Beacher told the Associated Press.

Great fit, indeed. Beacher's Madhouse boasts of "live monkeys, the world's oldest male stripper ... and the hottest chicks in Sin City" and bills itself as "Cirque du Soleil meets Girls Gone Wild."

After closing last July, Beacher's Madhouse is scheduled to return March 31, and take place the last Saturday of every month at The Joint nightclub in the Hard Rock.

Germans ask "Can we laugh at Nazis?" as Hitler comedy premieres

BERLIN: A slapstick comedy about Hitler by a Jewish filmmaker hits German cinemas amid a national debate on whether the country, six decades after the war, can laugh at the Nazis.

LONDON: An antique earring thought to have belonged to Hollywood legend Marlene Dietrich has been found under an old rollercoaster in a theme park in north-west England.

The German-born actress and cabaret star lost the pearl and gold earring in 1934 while taking a ride on "The Big Dipper" attraction at Blackpool Pleasure Beach during a personal appearance.

The piece of jewellery was unearthed after the site of the old Log Flume lake where the ride once stood was dredged as part of construction work.

"We have compared it [the earring] to pictures taken at the time of her visit and it certainly looks like one of hers," a Blackpool Pleasure Beach spokeswoman said. "It appears to have withstood the test of time quite well."

The television show parodies the acclaimed US drama "Little House on the Prairie" (1974-1983), about the life and adventures of the Ingalls family in the 19th century American West.

According to France's Le Monde newspaper, a French delegation will travel to the United Arab Emirates late this month to finalize details of the deal - notably on whether the new museum will carry the name "Louvre." The culture ministry refused to comment on the report.

The new museum satellite, planned for 2012, is to be part of a "culture district" on Saadiyat Island, future site of a multi-billion-dollar tourist resort just off the coast of Abu Dhabi. The project has sparked outrage in France where more than 2,000 people, including dozens of museum directors, curators and art historians, have signed a protest.

Britons set to become Europe's biggest wine spenders

LONDON: While Britons drink fewer bottles than the French, Germans, or Italians, Britain is expected to overtake its European neighbors in terms of money spent on wine by 2010, according to a report by the Vinexpo wine trade exhibition.

The growth in spending is both because of the rise in the amount of wine drunk and the fact that at 3.11 pounds Sterling ($6), the average price of a bottle is higher in Britain than in most European countries.

Sales of beer, traditionally a more popular tipple, have been in slow decline, while wine's popularity has been steadily increasing.

LONDON: Office workers are most likely to tell the truth in face-to-face communication and with colleagues they are close to - and most tempted to lie by e-mail, according to a British study.

The level of truthfulness is heavily dependent on the means of communication: most lies are told by e-mail, then by phone, and finally in one-on-one contact.

"People think it is less moral to lie to those they feel close to, and may also fear that such people are more likely to detect any lies," Sandi Mann, who co-wrote the study at the University of Central Lancashire.

Overall, the research found that workers were untruthful in some way in up to a third of all interactions, with those described as psychologically "distant" found to be most likely to lie.

Slim waist is eternal standard of feminine beauty, say scientists

PARIS: Feminine beauty has been celebrated across the ages, but an enduring belief is that attractiveness depends on fashion, culture, ethnicity, or on the eye of the beholder.

Not so for evolutionary psychologists.

In an innovative test, scientists at the University of Texas at Austin and at Harvard University trawled through three centuries of English-language literature and three Asian literary classics dating back nearly 2,000 years.
