'Idol' judge Paula Abdul blames odd interview behavior on audio snafu

Paula Abdul told Jay Leno and his U.S. viewers an audio feed mix-up was the reason for her seemingly odd behavior during a recent television appearance.

Appearing on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," Abdul said the mishap occurred during a news conference in which she was looking at one camera and "there are 30 cities talking into your ear," People Magazine said.

"I guess Alabama was in my ear and so was Seattle at the same time, so I'm answering questions to the wrong answers of the cities," she said..

Abdul, 44, made the strange appearance on a local Seattle station in which she swayed, bobbed and winked at the anchors, the clip of which has been distributed on the Internet. When asked what she was looking forward to on the new season of "Idol," Abdul responded, "How about a lot of you coming in. It's a wild party where you are."

Afterward, Abdul's spokesman said she was not drinking or on drugs during the appearance. The Fox Network issued a statement of support for Abdul.

"I answered the right questions in one of the cities," she told Leno.

'IDOL' CHATTER: What does Ken Barnes think of the new Idol?

In an appearance Monday on NBC's The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Abdul explained that her odd answers resulted from a communications glitch during a press junket in New York. "You're looking at one camera, and there are 30 cities talking in your ear," she said. "Well, there was a mistake. Alabama was in my ear and so was Seattle at the same time," and her answers to one were broadcast on the other.

"They are going, 'What in the heck? What did she say?' Not my fault," Abdul said. She explained she was having fun during the interviews. She found a silver lining. "I answered the right questions at one of the cities."

Paula Abdul Explains Bizarre TV Appearance

In what will most certainly be a morning Paula Abdul won’t soon forget, the “American Idol” judge appeared to be slurring her words during a very animated interview with Seattle’s KCPQ morning show.

The story exploded this weekend when the video made its way to the internet, showing up on youtube.com and prompting some to ask, was Paula under the influence?

According Paula’s publicist, the answer is most definitely no.

Abdul’s publicist said the “A.I.” judge was simply exhausted after three hours of interviews, adding, “Paula never drinks. I have known Paula Abdul since she was 13, and I have never seen her drink ever in my life.”

On Monday, Fox issued this statement.

"All of us at Fox have tremendous respect and admiration for Paula Abdul. She is a consumate professional who always gives 100% to everything she does. Last week, during a satellite press tour there were intermittent technical difficulties including severe audio issues in which multiple stations were speaking to her at once. Rather than getting angry about these difficulties, or stopping the tour, Paula forged ahead and decided to have fun with the increasingly challenging situation. Unfortunately, because reporters and viewers we're unaware of the situation, her humor was misconstrued."

But it seems no controversy can hurt “American Idol.” Just 24 hours before its highly anticipated return, the show is bigger than ever.

The latest headline boasts that the franchise is worth a whopping $2.5 billion!

“I feel cheated,” Ryan Seacrest said of the story. “I mean $2.5 billion. Simon has seen most of that.”

Seacrest promised that this season will be better than ever, telling us, “The producers want to outdo what we did last year and try and top.”

Also, expect “Idol’s” star power to increase tenfold. Mariah Carey and Sir Paul McCartney are reportedly in talks with producers to make guest appearances.

“Certainly having Mariah and Paul on the show would be a good step in the direction of the program,” Ryan admitted.

But “Idol” is not the only big break reality show Seacrest will be hosting this season. On the E! Network’s new show, “Paradise City,” Ryan will be searching for America’s next great broadcaster.

“It’s a different way to find your big break,” he insisted.

But with a steadily increasing workload and no break in sight, can the hardest working man in showbiz find time for love in his life?

“I am single,” Ryan told us, adding, “Who’s not looking for love? We’re always looking for love, right?”

As for the mystery blonde who Ryan was recently photographed with, he told us the woman is just a friend.

Slurring Paula Abdul Cancels Interviews

Singer-turned-American Idol judge Paula Abdul called off all her interviews Friday after clips of an earlier TV appearance appeared to show her drunk.

The video - in which Abdul slurs and bizarrely gestures - emerged on YouTube on Thursday, prompting speculation alcohol or medication were to blame.

She subsequently abandoned media engagements scheduled for Friday.

However, Abdul's spokesman Jeff Ballard insists tiredness and a minor throat infection, not inebriation, were the causes of the cancellations and earlier odd behavior.

He says, "She was exhausted. This was at the end of three days of press (interviews and appearances), and she has had cameras following her around for a reality TV show too.

"She was sitting in a room with just a camera and a mic on, and the controllers dropped the sound twice, which is why she rolled her eyes.

"She never drinks. I have known Paula Abdul since she was 13, and I have never seen her drink ever in my life. And no, she is not on any kind of medication. She was a little tired."

In 2005 Abdul revealed she suffers from a neurological disorder that causes chronic pain and requires a weekly injection of an anti-inflammatory drug.

Paula Abdul is blaming a technical glitch for why she sounded like she was out of it during a satellite interview with a Seattle TV station last week.

Abdul told Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show that she was getting one TV station's questions in one ear and another in her other ear and that made it seem like she was in her "own little world."

In the video, the "Idol" judge could be seen swaying from side to side, making odd faces, and laughing in a strange fashion.

At the beginning of the interview, she was asked by the TV reporters what she was looking forward to this season. "How about a lot of you comin' in … it's a wild party where you are," she replied, which seemed to fall on deaf ears.

The buzz on the Internet was that she was drunk, but Abdul says that's not her style. She says in all her years in the business she has never been seen "partying and whooping it up."

After much Internet talk about the segment, FOX supported the "Idol" judge in a statement given to TMZ on Monday.

"(Abdul) is a consummate professional who always gives 100% to everything she does. Last week, during a satellite press tour there were intermittent technical difficulties, including severe audio issues in which multiple stations were speaking to her at once," the statement said. The sixth season of the hit reality show kicked off Tuesday on FOX.

Abdul confuses US TV audiences

Paula Abdul was the subject of much hilarity yesterday, whilst promoting the new series of American Idol on American TV.

Abdul appeared on a Seattle morning news show, on which she appeared to be having some difficulty keeping it together. She giggled her way through the satellite-transmitted interview, leaving the show's anchors bewildered.

She later explained herself in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, claiming that there were "two cities in my ear". It transpired that Abdul's connection had crossed over, and she was answering questions posed by a different interviewer, with the results being broadcast on the Seattle show.

"I'm answering Birmingham answers but it's airing in Seattle's morning show, so it looked like I was just in my own little world," she laughed.

Abdul Sort Of Explains Drunken Behavior

In one of her more or less coherent moments, Paula Abdul defended her wacky appearance on a Seattle morning show last week.

A calm and collected Abdul told Ellen DeGeneres that there were "two cities in my ear...I'm answering Birmingham answers but it's airing in Seattle's morning show, so it looked like I was just in my own little world." Her constant slurring and giggles were apparently meant for Alabama and not Washington.[see full story for more] - Click here for the Full Story
